Business accelerator program helping Latino entrepreneurs in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Latin Chamber of Commerce launched its business accelerator program with the goal of helping a handful of entrepreneurs, but demand quickly proved there was a real need in Southern Nevada.

“We thought we were going to get 5 or 10 people to join and yet we’re way beyond that now, and I think it’s entrepreneurship, it’s people yearning to want to learn how to do it right,” said Peter Guzman, president of the Latin Chamber.

The program is free and bilingual, offering everything from technical training to mentorship.

“The first session starts with all about self-awareness, which a lot of business programs fail to do. It’s all about the business, it’s focused on the business, but this is also about leadership development of business owners,” said Maite Salazar, vice president of special projects.

One of those entrepreneurs, Kristal Ortega, launched Kunku, a furniture line designed for children on the autism spectrum.

“Now I think in an e-commerce thing, this is a good program,” Ortega said.

Ortega recently graduated from the program and tells us she feels more confident than ever to take her business to the next level.

“They are a great team, they help me a lot to grow my own business and to empower my idea I think is very important someone outside believing your idea like you,” Ortega said.
