LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Arbor View High School seniors graduated Tuesday at the Thomas and Mack.
However, as the ceremony began, the principal acknowledged the absence of senior McKenzie Scott.
“Before we begin our graduation celebration, I want to take a moment to recognize a graduate that should be with us today,” the principal said.
Scott was hit and killed earlier this month by suspected drunk driver.
“She will always be part of class of 2025,” the principal said.
Scott was on her way to pick up her cap and gown when police say Keenan Jackson hit and killed her by the school.
During Tuesday’s ceremony, there was also a moment of silence for Scott. Her name was called first when students lined up to get their diploma.
After the ceremony, her peers tell FOX, that her absence was felt.
“She used to sit next to me in government class and was a very passionate person. Even the day before she passed away, she was excited for prom,” said classmate Nayeli Estrada. “It was a good thing. It made me feel good that she was able to get a remembrance.”
However, instead of looking forward to Scott’s graduation, her family spent Tuesday morning back in court facing Jackson.
Jackson will still be in custody, however the state and defense will need time to negotiate, and there were talks of the case moving jurisdictions, but nothing was finalized.
Jackson will be back in court in two weeks.
