LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Hispanic Heritage Month is just around the corner, and the Southern Nevada Health District is celebrating by focusing on health improvement opportunities for the community.
According to the SNHD, data from 2023 shows there’s still work to be done. In Clark County, more than 18% of Hispanic adults reported being in fair or poor health. Over a third were overweight, and diabetes rates were higher among Hispanic adults compared to non-Hispanic whites.
Nearly 12% smoked cigarettes, officials say.
To help, the health district is offering free diabetes self-management, education, and support classes in both Spanish and English.
Classes will be held at the Main Public Health Center in Las Vegas on select dates. The first Spanish class is next Monday from 10 a.m. to noon, and the first English class is next Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Classes are free and registration is required, the Southern Nevada Health District says. To register for the classes in Spanish, visit Formulario de interés de la clase de automanejo de la diabetes or call (702) 759-1270. To sign up for classes in English, visit Diabetes Self-Management Class Interest Form or call (702) 759-1270.
