LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Adding solar to her home has turned into a nightmare for one Las Vegas woman and dozens of others.
Last week, the Nevada State Contractors Board revoked the license of Titan Solar finding the company guilty of harming her and 28 other homeowners.
Estie Kanelos-Azar showed FOX5 the damage she is now left to deal with. There are cracks everywhere in her home. In some areas, the textured ceiling is peeling and falling off. In one bedroom, water is coming in through the roof.
“Hoping for no more rain…now we are dealing with mold,” Estie Kanelos-Azar shared. It has been a couple years now since Kanelos-Azar and her husband decided to put solar on their newly remodeled home paid for through a VA loan which required a through roof inspection.
“Shortly thereafter we started noticing cracks throughout the house,” Kanelos-Azar recounted. Kanelos-Azar says the situation continues to get worse. Now during monsoon season and every passing storm, she expects more water to leak into her home.
Now she’s dealing with the situation alone. Estie Kanelos-Azar’s husband recently died of stomach cancer.
“It’s hard when you are putting your whole life with someone else to help them get better, you can’t focus on this,” Estie Kanelos-Azar described.
Kanelos-Azar reported her husband signed up through another solar company but install work was contracted out to Titan Solar. Not only did they damage the roof, but the panels added don’t produce enough energy to completely power the home.
Kanelos-Azar isn’t the only one left with glaring issues after a solar install. At the Nevada State Contractors Board hearing, she met other victims, many elderly. Kanelos-Azar feels the company deliberately targeted the most vulnerable.
“Everyone is just kind of stuck with the situation,” Estie Kanelos-Azar contended.
In addition to revoking Titan Solar’s license to operate in Nevada, the Nevada State Contractors Board last week levied fines against the company totaling $400,000. Homeowners can get up to $40,000 in restitution from a relief fund set up by the board. We have more information on that here: Residential Recovery Fund.
