LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – 19 gyms in Southern Nevada have been notified by the Health District that they must hire lifeguards or close their swimming pools for good.

They were previously allowed to operate with no lifeguard, with remote monitoring of the pool areas and regular walkthroughs, but that exemption is no longer in place. The Southern Nevada Health District has put an end to a waiver program allowing some gyms to operate swimming pools without a lifeguard, citing safety issues.

SNHD says 19 gyms in Southern Nevada had waivers and were notified that they must submit a safety plan and add lifeguards or close their pools until they do. Most have a deadline in June to do so.

The list includes the Las Vegas Athletic Club, Stirling Club, UFC FIT Centennial and EōS Fitness locations.

EōS Fitness Senior Regional Vice President of Sales for Nevada, Eric McCauley, said in a statement Wednesday:

“EōS is arranging to add more lifeguards at multiple locations throughout the Las Vegas Valley to align with the recent change in pool regulations from the Southern Nevada Health District. This may result in the temporary closure of some pools as we build out the team to support these new requirements. Additionally, EōS will permanently close some pools in the area, taking the opportunity to renovate and add new amenities, new equipment and more workout space to ensure members continue to enjoy a premium fitness experience. We encourage members to contact their local EōS Fitness to get the latest updates specific to their location so they can continue their water fitness workouts uninterrupted.”

EōS didn’t specify which EōS locations would be closing their pools but said you can check with your local gym for the latest updates.

UFC FIT Centennial says they’re currently in the process of hiring lifeguards to keep their pool open.

FOX5 also reached out to the other gyms on the list whose lifeguard waivers were revoked, but we’re still awaiting a response.
