LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Southern Nevada Health District provided an update to its COVID-19 vaccines as a new formula has been approved.
District Health Officer Dr. Cassius Lockett said SNHD does not yet have the updated COVID-19 vaccine in its clinics; however, the previous formula is available for people eligible.
Officials say there should be at least two months in between COVID-19 booster vaccines. Once the new formula is available, SNHD says it will let the public know.
“The Southern Nevada Health District remains committed to providing COVID-19 vaccines to everyone who is eligible, including adults ages 65 and older and people with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk for severe illness,” officials say. “COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and the best way to protect against severe illness, hospitalization, and death.”
The latest vaccine for the fall season is coming to the state, but access is limited as pharmacies wait for more federal approval per state law.

CVS and Walgreens both announced that the latest vaccine rollout has been halted in Nevada pharmacies. However, CVS Minute Clinics said vaccines should be available.
According to the Nevada Hospital Report, COVID-19 cases increased to 11.2% positivity rate through Aug. 23, and new regulations have caused barriers to vaccine access.
“The FDA rescinded emergency use authorizations and granted limited approvals for updated COVID-19 vaccines, restricting access primarily to individuals 65 years and older and younger adults at high risk for severe illness,” the report said. “Pharmacists who 2 administered nearly 90% of COVID shots during the previous season now face varying state regulations, with CVS reporting inability to vaccinate individuals in Massachusetts, Nevada, and New Mexico due to state laws.”
The report says the CDC’s advisory committee is expected to meet Sept. 18-19 to discuss COVID-19, hepatitis B, measles, and potential RSV vaccine recommendations.
