RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -In a six to three decision, one President Trump is still upset about, the US Supreme Court ruled tariffs imposed by Donald Trump were illegal.
The court ruled Trump’s reciprocal tariffs exceeded his authority. That authority was in Congress’s hands, said the justices.
The ruling left the administration with the task of refunding $160 billion Dollars.
$2.1 billion belongs to Nevada.
Or so says Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine.
“This is literally money you spend more on to the grocery store when you bought something,” says Conine. “Small businesses spent more for inventory. Everything got more expensive. There was absolutely no upside to that. Nothing got better.”
Conine says he’s sent the administration an invoice.
But so far has heard nothing back.
He says if or when the administration starts sending back money, he anticipates checks to Nevada families will be between $1700 and $2,000 dollars per family.
Those checks he says will be coming from the state treasurer’s office.
“The sooner we can get in, get it back out the door we don’t want people to have to figure out some new government website,” says Conine. “We figure who Nevadans are, that they were living here during that time period. Make it as simple as humanly possible; get that money back to people. Right?”
Conine says he will continue to work on getting the tariff money back to Nevadans as long as he is in office.
The U.S Supreme Court ruling came down on February 20, 2026.
He terms out but, is convinced whoever is Nevada’s next treasurer they too will work on the tariff money.
Nevadans he says don’t give up.
“The trick here is to not give up. What the Trump Administration is counting on is that states are going to roll over and play dead. “
