LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A new sense of safety is building in East Las Vegas. Literally.
Construction crews are making progress on South Hollywood Boulevard, where the newest Metro Police substation will sit.
Something District F County Commissioner Tick Segerblom told FOX5 is a long time coming.
“I never thought that when I was elected, police officers would be the number one priority but that is the number one priority,” Segerblom said.
The call for stronger police presence was loud as soon as Segerblom was elected six years ago.
It’s added to excitement for the commissioner being able to talk about when the substation will be coming to the east valley, rather than if.
“We have a substation to the north, a substation to the south,” Segerblom said “Truthfully, this area around Sahara, Charleston and Hollywood has been kind of a no man’s land so having this substation here is going to be great.”
Segerblom was particularly excited about the location of the substation.
Next door to a fire station, across the street from a high school and within a mile of multiple community parks.
“Having the cop cars here driving around the neighborhoods. It makes people feel safer and they are safer,” Segerblom said. “East Las Vegas is one of the oldest neighborhoods. The fact that they didn’t have a police station is pretty amazing so the fact that we’re going to have one is very exciting.”
When the substation opens in 2026, which Segerblom projects is still on track, the plan will be for officers and resources at Metro’s Southeast Area Command Station to move to the new substation on the east side while their current station is rebuilt.
A lot of work being done that Segerblom hopes will make the community feel less neglected.
“It’s going to be a huge change for everybody,” Segerblom said.
“I appreciate people’s patience and persistence. Honestly, if you stick around long enough, good things happen and that’s what this is.”
