LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Captain Mark Stone returned to the ice and made his presence felt immediately, scoring VGK’s first goal of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Vegas Golden Knights topped the Dallas Stars, 4-3, in Game 1 of the series.
Stone got the action started early in Dallas, scoring a power play goal just 1:23 into the game in his first appearance since Feb. 20. It was the first of five combined goals in the opening period.
VGK extended the lead in the second with another quick goal, this time from Brayden McNabb. The 4-2 lead held up for VGK through the end of the second period.
Goals remained scarce well into the third period until Mason Marchment answered for the Stars with a score with 8:14 remaining.
The hosts outshot the Knights but Vegas clamped down on defense late in the third, forcing the Stars to pull their goaltender for an extra skater with 2:30 remaining.
The desperate tactic did not pay off and VGK escaped with a 4-3 win. Logan Thompson started in net for the Knights and recorded 27 saves on 30 shots.
Game 2 of the opening-round series is in Dallas on Wednesday night.
