LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Southern Nevada Water Authority is reminding valley residents to reset their watering schedules this week!
Summer season watering schedules, and the related restrictions, are set to take effect on Wednesday, May 1, lasting through Aug. 31. The mandatory schedule prohibits spray irrigation between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., as well as any type of watering on Sundays.
The SNWA recommends ramping up sprinkler watering from three to four days a week and increasing the frequency of watering as needed throughout June, July, and August. However, residents are also encouraged to keep their eyes on the weather and adjust as needed.
The SNWA also provided the following water-saving landscaping tips to keep landscapes happy during the summer heat:
- Water in the early morning or evening to reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.
- Watering during prohibited hours or allowing water to spray or flow off your property is considered water waste and may result in a costly fine.
- Irrigate grass with pop-up sprinklers for a maximum of 12 minutes per watering day, set in three four-minute cycles, spaced one hour apart.
- Plants and trees need much less water than grass. Run your drip system only two to three days a week in the summer. Drip duration varies depending on the flow of your emitters.
Customers in the Las Vegas Water District’s jurisdiction could face an excessive use charge of $9 for every 1,000 gallons of water consumed over the monthly 28,000-gallon threshold. Customers can also cash in to the SNWA’s Water Smart Landscapes rebate program, which can result in $5 for each square-foot of grass that is removed and replaced with water-efficient landscaping.
