LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The man accused of driving a car through a local business and later attacking a woman with a knife claims it was an accident, according to an arrest report.

Officers responded to a Dollar Tree near Craig Road and Decatur Boulevard around 7:34 a.m. on Monday after receiving reports of an incident that included a citizen’s arrest.

Investigators allege 45-year-old Shawn Handley made threats before driving a tan 2011 Buick LaCrosse through the front of the store. Police say he then pursued a woman, identified in the report as his wife and the store manager, through the store before allegedly stabbing her multiple times.

Witnesses also reported gunfire during and after the crash, police said.

In an interview, the woman told detectives she had been arguing with Handley through calls and text messages and that he threatened to come to her workplace and “beat” her. She said she saw a confrontation outside between Handley and their younger son, then watched the vehicle crash into the storefront. She said she ran to the back to hide, but Handley found her and stabbed her repeatedly, the report says.

During a second interview, she said she could not clearly remember where her son was during the stabbing, but she heard yelling and a chase afterward, followed by a gunshot. The report also listed a 2025 incident in North Las Vegas in which the woman was shot after being caught between Handley and their son, Shawn Jr., as they exchanged gunfire.

Handley was later interviewed and told police he went to the store to talk with his wife. He claimed he argued with his son outside and believed his son was reaching for a gun, then sped off and accidentally drove into the store, the report says. He told investigators he was trying to get away, not chasing his wife, and that during a “scuffle” he had a utility knife out and “must have accidentally cut her.” Police said he acknowledged sending threatening texts and recognized the recovered knife as his.

The couple’s son was also interviewed under juvenile procedures and told police his mother called him about threats. He said he rode to the store with a Glock in a satchel, saw his father drive into the Dollar Tree, and fired into/at the vehicle to protect his mother. He said he then found his mother injured, then chased and shot at his father outside until his gun was empty, then left the area before being stopped by police, according to the report.

Handley was booked on multiple charges, including attempted murder with a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm.

He appeared in court Tuesday, where a judge set bail at $750,000. As of Wednesday, he remained in custody and was due back in court Thursday.
