LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Clark County Coroner has identified the suspect involved in a shootout that killed a North Las Vegas police officer.
That suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Alexander Andre Mathis.
The officer responded alongside other North Las Vegas police to the area of Camino Al Norte and Lone Mountain Road around 2:13 p.m.
Officers attempted to speak to the armed suspect, who ignored their commands and fled. The suspect was later located again, though he was armed.
After ignoring orders to show officers his hands, the suspect approached officers, which prompted them to open fire. In the shooting, police say an Jason Roscow was shot multiple times but managed to return fire, hitting the suspect.
The officer and Mathis were immediately taken to UMC, where they both died. The officer’s death is the first reported in North Las Vegas since 2017 when Detective Chad William Parque died in a crash, and since 1995, when Officer Paul Raul Elizondo was killed when a suspect grabbed his gun and shot him.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
