LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Southwest Gas and NV Energy are offering utility assistance to customers struggling to pay their bills amid the government shutdown, according to a company spokesperson.

It has been nearly a month since the government shutdown. Some federal employees have been furloughed, and families across the country are experiencing food insecurity.

SW Gas, which operates in Arizona, Nevada, and parts of California, has a range of payment plans and assistance programs to support those during this difficult time.

Available Programs:

  • Deferred Payment Plan: Gives customers who qualify a chance to pay overdue bills without disrupting their services.
  • Energy Share: An emergency assistance fund, which is allocated and managed by community partners.
  • Low Income Ratepayer Assistance (LIRA): Provides a 30% discount on the “per therm” rate and reduced service charges year-round.
  • Bill Assistance: Short-term emergency aid for qualifying customers.

NV Energy

NV Energy says it’s ready to help Nevadans facing financial hardships due to the ongoing federal government shutdown and the loss of SNAP benefits.

The public utility service says the NV Energy Foundation, funded by NV Energy, is assisting with $350,000 in grants to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and Three Square for emergency response.

According to a social media post, NV Energy says it’s waiving late fees for impacted customers, offering flexible payment plans and connecting customers to energy assistance programs.

Officials encourage Nevadans to call 211 for assistance.
