LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – To tackle homeless encampments all across the Las Vegas Valley, a bill moving through the Nevada Legislature would allow government social workers to hop jurisdictions to help people in need — and get camps cleaned up, quicker.
Assembly Bill 263 is being modified to allow for government social workers to move through various jurisdictions, according to Clark County Chair Tick Segerblom. As currently written, the bill would allow county social workers to cross into Nevada Department of Transportation or state property by freeways, all to offer people help and services. Social workers are dispatched to encampments to warn them of impending cleanups that could destroy all their belongings.
FOX5 covered the challenges with communities living near the highways, as camps hop back and forth over fences — creating more work for Clark County crews and state crews.

HELP of Southern Nevada works with all jurisdictions from Laughlin to Mesquite, offering the unhoused support, services and shelter. Louis Lacey is aware of the bill and offers insight.
“Clients know no boundaries. They’re going to go where they want to go,” Lacey said.
“We want to be able to meet with them and be able to provide services to them. The idea of us all working together as a continuum is what’s going to work. We all have a piece of this puzzle, and when we share information and we work together, that’s where we have our best outcomes,” Lacey said.
