LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Few people would turn down a chance to win a bunch of cash or a fabulous prize, especially here in Las Vegas.

But AARP warns, don’t let the dream of newfound wealth lure you into a scam.

You may encounter fake contests or sweepstakes through email, text, social media, or via fake ads online. Odds are excellent you’ll “win.” Then, bad actors will ask you to pay a fee upfront to collect your prize. They may also ask you to provide sensitive information, like your Social Security and bank account numbers.

No legitimate sweepstakes or contest would ask for either. If they do, it’s a scam, and you’ll lose big time.

AARP advises against getting caught up in the excitement of winning. Pause to consider the veracity of the contest — especially if you’re urged to act fast or miss out on the prize. Do you’re homework, if everything checks out, good luck! If not, you’ve saved yourself from possibly going bust.
