Tariffs blamed for drop in international visitors to Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority officials cited tariffs as a significant factor contributing to a decline in international visitors to the Entertainment Capital of the World during a board of directors meeting Tuesday.

Steve Hill, LVCVA president, said tariffs have contributed to a 20% drop in visitors from Canada. However, Hill said he is confident in the future of tourism in Las Vegas.

“The outlook for Las Vegas is still the envy of the tourism and hospitality industry,” Hill said. “We’re excited about the future of this city. There is still no place like Las Vegas anywhere in the world. And if you’re going to place a bet on any destination, place it on Las Vegas.”

In addition to targeting visitors, tourism officials are looking for ways to entice locals to stay in town for a Las Vegas staycation. The LVCVA recently launched a campaign for valley residents called “Locals Unlocked.”

The tourism page offers ideas for kids, staycations, off-Strip options and activities across Southern Nevada, along with available discounts for locals and families.

Hill pointed to major upcoming events at Sphere and Allegiant Stadium as reasons for optimism about the city’s tourism recovery.
