LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A holiday tradition returns to the Nevada Ballet Theatre this weekend!
Those prepared to see “The Nutcracker” may notice something missing this time, a live orchestra.
The theater says that it couldn’t reach an agreement with the Musicians Union of Las Vegas in time for opening weekend.
It stems from an issue over recordings of union musicians posted online.
The local union says it can approve videos for local media.
According to officials for online posts, there must be a deal with the national union.
Meanwhile the local union explained it’s beyond their scope.
The theater says it could not hire musicians without a full agreement in place.
Officials told FOX5 that the use of recordings online is so important to the theaters marketing efforts.
“Our content is all about what we do. And when we have an orchestra playing for us, or if we have four musicians on the stage, or a solo piano, that’s part of the experience and we want to share that along with the dance and what the company is performing,” said Roy Kaiser, the artistic director of Nevada Ballet Theatre.
The Musicians Union of las vegas posted this statement, addressing the snag in negotiations.
Ballet theatre officials will not utilize a live orchestra until the agreement is finalized. Musicians will be unable to work with the theatre for the time being.
They stand as the only major performing arts organization in Las Vegas without an agreement.
The NBT says they will move forward with their planned performance of the Nutcracker.
