HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – Parents are weighing in on what they want to see in the next Clark County School District Superintendent.
There’s focus groups happening all over the valley, like in Henderson at the Heritage Park Senior Facility.
The main concerns? People want to know their voices are being heard, and how the district is going to find someone qualified for the job this late in the year, assuming they already have a job somewhere else.
Only 10 people showed up Tuesday night, but they had a lot to say about what they’re looking for.
Some of the common themes: they want a Superintendent who has taught in the classroom for several years at various grade levels, someone who understands finance and knows how money should be used to help students and the district as a whole, a strong leader with the ability to collaborate with others like the board members, and someone who is from Nevada.
That last part was a point of contention, since the firm hired to help CCSD in its search is also opening up the candidate search on a national level.
But locals, like Matthew Yealy think more people need to be part of the process because the outcome will effect them.
“I would like to see more people engaged on community issues, a lot of the times, more often than not, it’s a small, intimate group like this, where a handful of people give their opinions, and the overwhelming majority are either too busy or cannot do it or just don’t care,” Yealy said.
Search firm leaders say by next week, they will have conducted 51 focus groups across the valley and present their findings to the board to analyze what the community cares about.
All interviews with finalists will be public record, and people can tune in at home next month to watch that process.
The search firm says it hopes to have the next Superintendent in place come November.
