LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A chance at a free shopping spree might sound pretty good as parents add up the cost of sending kids back to school, but be warned, the risk of getting scammed is even higher than the odds of winning.

The opportunity may show up in a social media post, email, or text message. All you have to do to enter is click a link and enter your email address and phone number to claim your prize. BUT – you won’t win anything but an endless stream of spam emails and annoying marketing calls. You also open the door to future cybercrime because your email and phone number are now compromised.

Always be suspicious of any unsolicited offers, especially those that ask for personal information. Never give out any personal information, such as your email or phone number, to an unfamiliar person or organization online. And be sure to verify the legitimacy of any company before deciding to engage in any “special offers.”
