LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – South Las Vegas residents believe a mailbox thief may have a master key after two community mailboxes are out of commission, but remain undamaged.

Jason Phillips says his community mailbox has been closed since early January.

On it, a paper sign reads, “Your mail is being held for pickup at Silverado Post Office while this box is being replaced.”

“It’s not pried open at all,” Phillips says. “Somebody had a key to get inside of it, there’s no damage to the box at all.”

His wife, Erika Phillips, agrees.

“It looks like it’s a functioning mailbox,” she says. “To me, somebody had the key or made a duplicate.”

For three months, Erika and Jason say they’ve been forced to pick up their mail at the post office each week.

Then last week, a mailbox one street over shut down. It also doesn’t appear to be tampered with, and the same paper sign is posted on the front of it.

FOX5 reached out to USPS about Erika and Jason’s stolen master key concerns.

A spokesperson said over email that they have a proprietary key system that they are unable to elaborate on.

“The Silverado Post Office management team and our maintenance department are working to get the new high-security Cluster Box Unit installed by the end of the week,” the spokesperson said.

“Well, if the new boxes can’t get broken into, let’s just start replacing them all,” Jason says.

FOX5 also reached out to ask if USPS would consider proactively replacing units, they provided the following statement:
