LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In response to the Cybertruck explosion at Trump International Hotel, chances are you’ll notice beefed up security on the Strip.
Las Vegas is always filled with flashing lights, but police lights are adding to that Thursday night. It didn’t go unnoticed, according to Jason Chrisco from Knoxville.
“The security went from 50 to 1,000 overnight,” Chrisco said.
Chrisco sees that a lot can change in 24 hours.
“Last night it was almost desolate out here for a little while. I think some folks were just afraid to come out. I needed to go to the gas station, and was very afraid, so I stayed in my room,” Chrisco said.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill hopes Las Vegas residents and tourists seeing a larger police presence will put them at ease.
“That’s entirely our entire community, not only Fremont Street and the Strip, but the entire community as well. Just so that we have the community feeling safe,” McMahill said.
The sheriff adds law enforcement will remain at New Year’s Eve levels which means more than 1,000 officers ready to respond in case of any threat.
Our FOX5 crew saw them up and down the Strip Thursday, posted inside and outside casinos and hotels.
It’s something Las Vegas local, Shin Vallos takes comfort in.
“It may give an ideology of reinforcement that they are here to help or protect and serve,” Vallos said.
A Metro Police official who tells FOX5 they never provide exactly how many officers are inside and outside of properties on The Strip and Downtown Las Vegas for security reasons, but they’ll have an increased presence “until further notice.”
Kayla from Maryland says she feels better after hearing that.
“I feel like before the event happened, I didn’t notice much of a presence of security or police officers, and now I feel like I can’t look a second without seeing them,” Kayla said.
She elaborated where she’s noticing the officers. “On the streets, as I was driving in the Uber, as I was in different casinos and stuff, I just feel like their presence was a lot more visible and known.”
Metro officers told FOX5 Thursday night there is a police presence in the valet area of every casino on the Strip.
