LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A rush to make a flight could cost a driver thousands.

A Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a driver Tuesday morning near Blue Diamond and the I-15 who was traveling over 104 miles per hour in a construction zone, with a posted speed limit of 55.

“He was late, he was trying to get back to California to make a flight to return home to his home state and that was it,” Trooper Kevin Vostinar said.

Trooper Vostinar said these speeds are par for the course on Las Vegas Valley roadways.

“I probably encounter upper 90s to low 100s probably at least once a week, if not every other week,” he says.

Vostinar issued the driver a citation for reckless driving and speeding.

He estimates the driver will owe over $2,000, because fines double in a construction zone, although that’ll ultimately be up to a judge to decide.

Vostinar decided not to arrest the driver. He says, troopers have to consider several factors when making arrests for speeding, including prior arrests and how many people were endangered on the roadway.

“If I arrest him, and he does get an arrest, even for the traffic offense, which could very well be the case, that is an adult arrest that will stay with him forever if he’s convicted,” Vostinar said.

Over Memorial Day weekend, NHP will work with California Highway Patrol to bust speeders on both sides of the state line. These efforts will start Friday and continue through the weekend.
