LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A car crash in west Las Vegas Thursday afternoon left nearly 3,500 NV Energy customers without electricity and two people in critical condition.
The crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian near the intersection of Vegas and Buffalo drives in west Las Vegas just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials. The pedestrian and one of the individuals in one of the vehicles were taken to an area hospital and remain in critical condition.
There was no immediate word on the condition of anyone else possibly involved in the crash.
An eyewitness on the scene described the crash, saying that a vehicle was seen spinning and colliding with a power utility. She said she saw sparks from the electrical box after the crash.
RTC Southern Nevada said all northbound and southbound lanes of Buffalo Drive were blocked from Washington Avenue to Cielo Vista Avenue. Additionally, they said the eastbound and westbound lanes on Vegas Drive were blocked from Alps Street to Bellglen Drive. Police advised commuters to avoid the area.
NV Energy reported 143 customers without power just after 4:30 p.m.. That number is down dramatically from just under 3,500 customers without power in the 89128 ZIP code an hour earlier. The outage was reported just before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Albertsons grocery store at Sea Breeze Village on the northeast side of the intersection of Vegas and Buffalo drives was without power just before 3 p.m., as was an AutoZone Auto Parts store on the southeast side of the intersection.
NV Energy officials acknowledged the outage, saying a crew was working to restore power “as quickly and safely as possible.” An estimated time of restoration was not immediately available.
