LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada State Contractor’s Board says it joined a national enforcement against unlawful contractors.
According to a press release, the board joined other states in an undercover enforcement operation coordinated by the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies (NASCLA) from Oct. 13 to 25. Nevada’s operation focused on identifying unlicensed contractors and addressing illegal construction activities.
Officials say criminal cases were opened after two undercover operations found six unlicensed contractors. The board also conducted 13 unannounced job site visits where 134 license details were verified. As a result, the board says it opened 14 criminal cases and issued 11 cease and desist orders, 19 administrative citations and two violation letters.
“Undercover operations are an important part of the Board’s investigative strategies because it allows us to experience first-hand what consumers face when dealing with unlicensed contractors,” said executive officer David Behar. “We are pleased to see the same initiatives taking place across the country as we unite to send a clear message that adherence to the construction laws of our respective states are taken seriously and serve to safeguard the public from becoming financially harmed when engaging in construction projects.”
The Nevada State Contractor’s Board says consumers are urged to verify a contractor’s license through its website.
The board says the following are examples of tactics associated with unlawful construction activities:
- Demands for cash payments and large deposits prior to work beginning.
- Unwillingness to provide a written contract.
- Unsolicited home visits from individuals eager to gain access to your home.
- Aggressive/misleading sales tactics.
