LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – University Police Southern Command says there’s an ongoing scam where the caller is impersonating the police department.

The caller claims to be from the University Police Department. They may say the victim or a family member has an outstanding warrant for your arrest or are in trouble with the police.

The suspect then demands money or threatens arrest.

University police say this call is a scam. The department will not contact people and demand payment to drop charges or dismiss a warrant.

For those who receive a call like this, police say to hand up immediately and call the department directly to validate the call.

University police say those who receive a questionable call should:

  • Don’t give in to pressure to take immediate action.
  • Don’t engage in any conversation, as scammers may record your response.
  • Don’t provide your credit card number, bank account information, social security number, or other personal information to a caller.
  • Don’t send money if a caller tells you to wire money or pay with a prepaid debit card or transfer any funds to a Bitcoin account.
  • Don’t travel to any location the caller asked you to go to.
