LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV men’s soccer received a 35th-minute goal from senior Gabe Sanchez and held strong defensively the rest of the way to earn a 1-0 shutout win over CSUN Sunday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The hard-fought victory against the Matadors (1-2-3) handed the Rebels (3-3) their first winning streak of the season with their second straight positive result. The Scarlet & Gray also improves to 2-0 at home.
A Las Vegas native, Sanchez notched the game-winning score after his UNLV teammate Lucas Gelebart’s cross attempt from near the left post led to the ball being deflected off a CSUN defender toward the hometown hero.
STAT OF THE GAME:
on Despite fielding only 10 players after a 67th-minute caution, UNLV sophomore goalkeeper Hugo Lemos and the Rebel backline denied all five CSUN shots during the game’s final 23 minutes for the clean sheet.
In that span, Lemos made three of his five saves and his supporting cast added a team stop to combine for four of their six saves in the match.
One other Matador shot deflected off the woodwork in the 79th minute.

“We had a solid start with a couple of early looks and then Gabe Sanchez scored a great goal to get us to halftime.
We needed to be better in the second half in some key moments with the ball, but credit to the team for a gutsy second-half defensive performance when it counted to earn the win and get a clean sheet.”

NOTES:
- Following Sanchez’s game-winner, the Rebels have now started the year with goals in six consecutive contests.
- This was UNLV’s third shutout of the year and second consecutive match without allowing a goal after defeating CSUB 1-0 on the road on Wednesday.
- Lemos left the contest with two shutouts to his name in 2024. His other goose egg came in the Rebels 2-0 season-opening victory over Tulsa at home.
- In two home matches, the Rebels have yet to concede a goal at Peter Johann Memorial Field during the 2024 campaign.
