LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV football head coach Barry Odom announced a class of 21 scholarship student-athletes who have signed commitments to become Rebels during Wednesday’s opening day of the early national signing period.
For the first time ever, a UNLV football class unanimously ranks first in the Mountain West according to 247Sports, On3 and Rivals and ranks as high as fourth among all Non-A5 schools according to Rivals. Every signee on the list coming from high school earned at least one three-star rating from the four major outlets and a full 11 new players were ranked in the top 100 nationally at their respective position.
The latest additions include 18 high school players and a trio of junior-college transfers. A full 16 are on track to graduate early, enroll at UNLV in January and compete in what will be the third spring practice under Odom.
“I’m certainly excited about the start of this Rebel recruiting class,” said Odom. “We have added some key pieces to our foundation that will help build our program and continue the success we have had so far. The urgency and relationships that our staff has in recruiting will help transform UNLV football to great success and these early signees all have skills and qualities that will be a huge part of that. I’m thrilled to add these guys today and look forward to filling out this class in February as we continue to add key pieces to our program.”
The overall early class is heavy on defense as 14 new Rebels make their home on that side of the ball compared to seven on offense. The position breakdown: 6 DL, 6 DB, 2 LB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 QB, 1 OL and one TE.
The 21-player group consists of student-athletes whose hometowns are spread among 11 states: five are from Texas, four from California, two each are from Nevada, Missouri and Arkansas while one each is from Colorado, Washington, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Mississippi.
The Rebels, who are ranked No. 20 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, have won 10 games for the first time since 1984 and will travel to Idaho to face Boise State in Friday’s Old Trapper Mountain West Championship. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT on FOX.
