LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV rookie runner Greg Burrell, a product of Las Vegas’ Desert Pines High School, has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
The true freshman led all players with 101 net rushing yards in Saturday’s record-setting 72-14 UNLV victory over Utah Tech at Allegiant Stadium. It took only 11 carries for Burrell to compile the most yards in a single game since head coach Barry Odom’s arrival last season (exactly one yard more than Jai’Den Thomas rolled up at UTEP last fall).
As one of an eye-popping six different Rebels who ran for a touchdown vs. the Trailblazers, Burrell had a long of 42 yards and scored his first collegiate touchdown from four yards out. His efforts helped his squad earn a school-record 695 total offensive yards and tie for the second-most points in a game.
Burrell becomes the first UNLV non-quarterback to win the MW Freshman of the Week Award, which started in 2021. Next up, he and the Rebels (2-0) will make a Friday visit to Kansas on ESPN. The next home game is set for September 28 vs. Mountain West rival Fresno State starting at 12:30 p.m.
