LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV men’s golf team finished tied for ninth at the Sahalee Players Championship hosted by Washington as play wrapped up Sunday at Sahalee Country Club (par 72, 7,007 yards).

Senior Caden Fioroni and junior Wyatt Plattner tallied par-or-better scores in the final round to lead the way for the Rebels as top-25 finishers. Fioroni’s third-round 72 helped him finish tied for 13th (+1) and Plattner’s final-round 3-under 69 placed him in a tie for 23rd (+3).Behind its leading individual scorecards, the Scarlet & Gray (+21) concluded the final round with its weekend-best 2-over 290 to move three spots up the team leaderboard into the top 10. The remainder of UNLV’s lineup included senior Trevor Lewis (+8) in a tie for 46th, senior Ben Sawaia (+12) in 60th and sophomore Dillon Dean (+19) in a tie for 73rd in his Rebel debut. Competing as an individual, junior Brett Sawaia (+19) also tied for 73rd.

The team title went to Arizona State as the only squad to shoot below par at 7-under 857 through 54 holes. Rounding out the top five were Florida (+4) in second, Arizona (+6) in third, Pepperdine (+10) in fourth and Duke (+11) in fifth.
Oregon’s Aiden Kraft won individual medalist honors with a 4-under 212 for the tournament, edging ASU’s duo of Jose Luis Ballester (-3) and Preston Summerhays (-3) by one shot.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will play at their next tournament in 12 days when they compete in New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Invitational from September 20-21.

NOTES:

  • The Rebels went up against eight teams ranked in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll at the season-opening tournament. Among those were host and No. 18 UW, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 10 Florida, No. 14 Arizona, No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 20 Oklahoma State and No. 24 Duke.
