LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As Immigration and Customers Enforcement (ICE) is conducting more raids and arrests nationwide, UNLV is warning the community about scammers posing as ice agents.
The UNLV immigration clinic says the scam involves someone claiming to be an ice agent asking for money, bank accounts, or other personal information.
The clinic says real agents will not ask for money.
The clinic says the easiest way to protect yourself if encountering a scammer or a real ICE agent is to remain silent.
Michael Kagan Director, UNLV immigration clinic said, “You don’t have to give any information except your name. So, basically don’t answer questions about where you’re from, where you were born. Say I’d like to remain silent and you can ask, ‘am I free to go?’ And if the answer’s yes, just walk away slowly and calmly. Don’t engage.”
The UNLV immigration clinic is working to get more information out to the local community on what their rights are, and to connect them with resources.
