LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Five Lady Rebels scored in double-figures and UNLV dominated New Mexico 90-65 on Saturday afternoon at Cox Pavilion. The Scarlet & Gray (19-5, 11-1 MW) won both games against Lobos (13-12, 6-6) this season.
Aaliyah Alexander led UNLV with 15 points, having only missed one of her shots against New Mexico. Alexander was 2-for-3 from the field and a perfect 1-for-1 from the three and 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Kiara Jackson and Meadow Roland each put up 13 points and Roland led the squad in rebounds with nine. McKinna Brackens had 12 points for the Lady Rebels and was tied for the lead in assists with four. Alyssa Brown collected 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot.
The Lobos were led by Destinee Hooks who had 15 points and Alyssa Hargrove with 13 points. Nayli Padilla was the leading rebounder for New Mexico bringing down seven rebounds.
TURNING POINT: In the first quarter, the Lobos were up 5-2 until the Lady Rebels countered going on a 13-point scoring run to take a 15-5 lead with 5:11 left in the first 10 minutes. New Mexico then went on a 7-3 run before UNLV closed out the quarter with a four-point run and were up 22-12. The Scarlet & Gray continued the run scoring eight more straight points including four made free throws from Alexander. UNLV had a 30-12 lead with 6:04 left before the half and never lost sight of the advantage.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Lady Rebels dished a season-high 23 assists. Brackens and Brown each had four, Jackson, Teagan Colvin and Kenadee Winfrey each dished three assists, while Alexander and Kimpson had two apiece, respectively. Macie James and Macy Spencer also had one assist each.
OTHER NOTES:
- The Lady Rebels held the Lobos to only eight points in the second quarter.
- UNLV won the paint battle 38-14.
- The Lady Rebels out-shot the Lobos 51.8% (29 of 56) to 35.4% (23 of 65).
- Alexander tied the single-game free throw record with her 1.000 (10 of 10) free throw percentage.
- UNLV’s bench out-scored New Mexico’s bench 33-20.
