THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Sophomore Zach Little and the UNLV men’s golf team both surged to the top of the individual and team leaderboards Tuesday at Pepperdine’s Southwestern Invitational at Sherwood Country Club (par 71, 7,081 yards).
Led by Little’s 4-under 67, the Rebels (-4) combined for a second-round 5-under 279 to surge three spots up the standings and two shots ahead of San Diego State (-2) and Texas (-2) in a tie for second. Little, meanwhile, pulled into a tie for the day-two individual lead with the Longhorns’ Christian Maas at 5-under for the tournament.
The Scarlet & Gray received another pair of sub-par rounds from seniors Caden Fioroni at 2-under 69 – which included an eagle on the par-5 14th hole – and Trevor Lewis at 1-under 70. At the same time, Fioroni (E) climbed 20 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for ninth and Lewis (+7) moved up 19 places into a tie for 46th.
Also in the top 10, junior Wyatt Plattner overcame a double bogey on No. 13 to finish his day in a tie for third at 3-under through 36 holes. Rounding out the Rebel lineup is Ben Sawaia (+7) in a tie for 46th alongside his teammate Lewis.
After dropping in 16 first-round birdies, the Rebels more than doubled that with 21 birdies on the day. Little and Plattner contributed five apiece for the second consecutive round, while Lewis and Fioroni added four each and Sawaia had three.
