BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (FOX5) – A 59th-minute goal headed in by sophomore Bryce Allred propelled UNLV men’s soccer to a 1-0 road victory over CSU Bakersfield and silenced a crowd of 1,867 fans in attendance Wednesday night at CSUB Main Soccer Field.
Allred soared high in the box to receive a corner kick from sophomore Kai Merrill for the game-winner in a defensive battle against CSUB (2-2-1) as the Rebels (2-3) ended a four-game road swing.
Making his first start in net for the Scarlet & Gray, senior goalkeeper James Anderson provided strong support to the Rebels’ backline as they earned the squad’s second shutout of the season. Anderson walked away with the goalkeeper win and his first shutout of the year after making two saves in the full 90 minutes.
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV capitalized on both its one shot on goal and one corner for the match to overcome the shot-on-goal disparity that tilted in favor of the Roadrunners with three shots on target. The goal was Allred’s first of the year and Merrill’s assist also marked his first of the season.
“I am really proud of this group and the character they showed tonight,” said UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig. “To go on the road again and put a complete performance together against a well-coached team in front of a big crowd shows the progress they have made. We now need a big showing from our UNLV fans on Sunday to keep this streak going!”
UP NEXT: The Rebels will make a return to Las Vegas for Sunday’s 7 p.m. matchup with CSUN at Peter Johann Memorial Field to begin a string of five straight home matches.
