LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – UNLV men’s soccer’s non-conference slate came to a close Thursday night in a 4-2 defeat to Cal State Fullerton at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels (3-5) bookended the match with the first and last goals, but the Titans (4-3-3) strung together four straight goals in between those that proved the difference in the contest.
Chiming in on the Scarlet & Gray scoring, sophomore Kai Merrill scored his first goal of the season and Gabe Sanchez added his second. Merrill finished a header that followed a Brophy Howard cross to a headed pass from Nico Lopez in the eighth minute and Sanchez converted his penalty kick in the 74th minute.
In spite of the final score, UNLV found a way to create opportunities on the attack throughout the contest to finish with a season-high 12 total shots and a season-high-tying five shots on goal.
UP NEXT: The Rebels begin WAC play next Thursday, October 3, vs. San Diego State at 8 p.m. That match kicks off a doubleheader with women’s soccer’s game at 5:30 p.m. and a tailgate hosted by the UNLV Soccer Foundation to start the evening’s activities.
NOTES:
- Following Sanchez’s and Merrill’s scores, the Rebels have now started the year with goals in eight consecutive contests.
- This also marked the second straight game UNLV scored two goals.
