LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV women‘s golf team stands in a tie for fourth through Sunday’s opening two rounds at the Jim West Challenge being hosted by Texas State at Kissing Tree Golf Club (Par 72, 6,123 yards).
The Rebels combined for a 5-under 571 through 36 holes, including a second-round 6-under 282 to lower their score after a first-round 1-over 289. In the second-round push, senior Mayumi Umezu led the way with a 4-under 68, her counterpart McKenzi Hall added a 3-under 69, freshman Amber Chen chipped in a 2-under 70 and Zi Yu Foong shot a 3-over 75.
After the second round, the Scarlet & Gray lineup featured both Umezu (-4) and Hall (-3) in the top 15 in ties for seventh and 12th, respectively, after each recorded back-to-back par-or-better rounds. Joining them at the Texas State event, Chen is tied for 23rd (E), Foong (+4) is tied for 38th, and senior Hina Matsui (+5) is tied for 43rd. In her debut, freshman Caitlin Shippam (+11) is tied for 56th playing as an individual.
Tied atop the team leaderboard, TCU, and Houston posted matching 14-under 562 day-one scorecards for a three-shot advantage over Oklahoma (-11) in third. The Sooners’ MaKayla Tyrrell jumped out to the individual lead at 8-under 64.
