PHOENIX, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV softball team fell 5-2 against San Diego in the opening game of the Purple Classic hosted by Grand Canyon on Friday at GCU Softball Stadium.
The Rebels (13-7) were able to cut the deficit in half, twice, but were held scoreless for the final five innings of play. Sofia Morales led the Scarlet & Gray at the plate going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: The Toreros jumped out front, 3-0, in the top of the first inning on a three-run home run. The Rebels were able to cut the deficit to two after a sac fly by Jesse Farrell to center field, 3-1. In the top of the second, San Diego added another run on a single through the left side to make it 4-1. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Maddie Scott drew a seven-pitch walk. Ariana Martinez then singled up the middle to give UNLV runners on the corners. Sofia Morales hit a single up the middle of her own, bringing Scott across the plate and made it 4-2. The third was scoreless on both sides, and the Toreros tried to get things going in the top of the fourth, but after a leadoff double, San Diego was retired in order. In the bottom of the fourth, the Rebels had two runners on, but were left stranded. The next two innings both squads were held off the scoreboard. In the top of the seventh, San Diego scored a run on an infield single to go up 5-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Scarlet & Gray had two base runners on, but were unable to get them around.
OTHER NOTES
- Jesse Farrell had one walk and a RBI against the Toreros.
- Ariana Martinez went 1-for-3 with a walk. Martinez has now reached base in all 20 UNLV games.
- Diamond Sefe also had a hit against San Diego. Sefe is currently on a four-game hitting streak.
- Maddie Scott drew three walks and scored a run for UNLV.
- Karmyna Becerra had two walks against San Diego. Becerra is now on a 10-game reached base streak.
- The Rebels had 10 walks on the day against USD, which is a team-high thus far.
UP NEXT: The Scarlet & Gray will continue the Purple Classic on Saturday, March 8 with two games. The Rebels will first face Saint Joseph’s at 11 a.m. PT/12 p.m. MT, followed by playing Penn at 1:30 p.m. PT/2:30 p.m. MT.
