LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV softball team fell in both games on day two of the Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium on Saturday. The Rebels (2-2) battled against No. 23 Oregon (4-0), but came up short, 10-6. UNLV was unable to get things going against Buffalo (1-3) and dropped 6-0 to the Bulls.
GAME 1: UNLV 6, Oregon 10
The Ducks went ahead in the top of the first inning 1-0 on a single through the right side. Oregon then tallied two more runs in the top of the second and third inning taking a 4-0 lead. The fourth was scoreless on both sides, until the Ducks added three more runs to go up 8-0 in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth, the Rebels started to begin a two-out rally. Kailani Olivas and Jesse Farrell drew back-to-back walks. Sofia Morales then sent a single back up the middle to bring in a run and make it 7-1. Ariana Martinez stepped into the box and sent the first pitch she saw straight over the left center wall clearing the bases to cut the Ducks’ advantage to three, 8-5. The sixth was scoreless again for both squads, but Oregon added two more runs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the final frame, the Rebels tacked on one more run, but were unable to continue another two-out rally.
GAME 2: UNLV 0, Buffalo 6
Buffalo got on the board first with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the first inning. In the top of the second, the Bulls added three more runs on two hits to make it 4-0. The next four innings on both sides were scoreless until Buffalo tallied two more runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 6-0. The Rebels were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.
OTHER NOTES:
- Martinez was 3-for-6 through two games, which included a home run and four RBI.
- Farrell and Morales each had a single against Oregon.
- Morales also had a single against Buffalo along with Karmyna Becerra.
UP NEXT: UNLV will close out their Desert Classic against Southern Utah at 12 p.m.
