LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV women’s soccer team wrapped up its weekend road trip to California with a 1-0 win over San José State Sunday at Spartan Soccer Stadium.

Continuing their best start to Mountain West play since 2016, the Rebels (6-6-2) improve to 4-1-1 in MW competition this season and extend their unbeaten streak to four matches with the victory over the Spartans (0-10-4, 0-4-2).

After the halftime break, junior Michelle Madrid scored UNLV’s eventual game-winning goal in the 49th minute. The Las Vegas native netted her first goal of the season as she cleaned up the deflection off the SJSU goalkeeper’s save on sophomore Elizabeth Bautista’s shot from just outside the 18.

Senior goalkeeper Lucia Guemes and the Scarlet & Gray backline picked up the squad’s second shutout of the season, keeping all 11 shots fired by the Spartans out of goal. In her 90 minutes on net duty, Guemes made three saves against SJSU’s three shots on goal.In spite of firing a lower amount of shots, the Rebels created more scoring opportunities with a 4-3 shots-on-goal advantage over SJSU.

Outside of Madrid and Bautista, junior Cadence Whitley and sophomore Trinity Buchanan each added one shot on target.

“This was a good road win for the group. Our team has such great chemistry and our players are so fun to coach. They are relentless. I’m really pleased with our performance and how they closed the game out,” said UNLV Head Coach Jenny Williams.
