Albuquerque, N.M. (FOX5) – UNLV men’s golf senior Caden Fioroni and junior Brett Sawaia each placed themselves inside the individual top 20 after Friday’s opening two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate being hosted by New Mexico at UNM Championship Course (par 72, 7,546 yards).
The pair of Rebels, who sit at 2-under 142 through 36 holes, mirrored each other as Fioroni shot a first-round 69 (-3) and a second-round 73 (+1) while Sawaia followed up a first-round 73 (+1) with his own 69 (-3) in the second round.
Adding to the Scarlet & Gray scorecard, which featured four par-or-better rounds on the day, junior Wyatt Plattner and senior Ben Sawaia each tallied an even-par 72 in the second round to move into ties for 36th and 54th, respectively. Also competing for the Rebels is senior Trevor Lewis (+6) in a tie for 73rd and as an individual sophomore Dillon Dean (+2) is tied for 36th.
As a team, UNLV (+2) made its way into the current 10th-place spot through two rounds after combining for a 2-under 286 in the second round.
Taking the respective day-one team and individual leads are host UNM at 21-under and the Lobos’ own Carson Herron at 11-under. The Lobos own an 11-shot lead over the next closest competitor in Grand Canyon (-10).
