LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5)—The University of Nevada, Reno, says it will move forward with hosting a match against San José State University.
UNR is scheduled to play San José on Oct. 26.
According to the university, members of the Wolf Pack women’s volleyball team told the University the team had decided to forfeit that match.
Officials shared clarification that the University or Department of Athletics ultimately make that decision.
Nevada Constitution Section 24 requires a public university to refrain from forfeiting a game due to gender identity or expression.
UNR shared the details of this article in the constitution, which states.
The university says they will not punish UNR volleyball players who decide not to compete in Saturday’s game.
“The University continues to support the rights of the volleyball players who choose not to participate,” shared the University of Nevada, Reno communications team.
University officials say they are committed to protecting the First Amendment rights of its athletes.
“The University acknowledges that a student athlete’s refusal to participate in the match with San José State University can be interpreted as free expression that is protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution,” explained the University of Nevada, Reno communications team.
