LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Before Clark County School District students return to the classroom, the district wants families to know about their “one stop shop” for support services.
The Director of the CCSD Family Support Center Cindy Flores says because this is only their second year since opening, a lot of families in the district don’t know what they do.
The Family Engagement Department provides resources like academic and parenting workshops, and adult English classes.
When it comes to general care, their Health Services Department will help sports physicals and vaccinations.
But, Flores says a huge part of what they do involves their Newcomer Support Team. The team helps families new to the country transition into Nevada, and the school district.
“When they come across, a lot of their documents are taken away- passports, birth certificates. So, they come with just their immigration documentation, and the schools don’t quite know what to do with them,” Flores says.
“What they’re doing is sending them to us, then we can pick up the phone, call the schools, and say, ‘this document actually is appropriate.’”
She says oftentimes, families don’t know their child can receive credit from transcripts from a different country.
