LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Updated COVID-19 and flu vaccines have started to arrive in Las Vegas pharmacies and doctors’ offices, as illnesses rise nationally with the return of kids to school and the impending approach of the winter surge of infections.
In June, the CDC recommended that everyone 6 months-old and above get an updated COVID-19 and flu vaccine.
FOX5 went to the CVS Pharmacy off Farm Road, as appointments for vaccinations opened up online for the new COVID-19 vaccines and are available daily. Walk-ins are also accepted for patients.
“The flow has been constant: a lot of shots, not only for COVID-19 but also the flu,” said CVS Pharmacist Jolene Blaine.
The news is welcome for many Las Vegas locals, as the Las Vegas Valley has been hit this summer with a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Southern Nevada Health District told FOX5 earlier this summer, fewer cases occurred last year, but fewer people were vaccinated, leading to lessened immunity for many in 2024.
Though Las Vegas’ wastewater levels have dropped from “Very High” to “High,” other parts of the country are experiencing a spike as the KP 3.1.1. variant is hitting the U.S.
The fall and winter typically bring a surge in COVID-19, flu, cold and RSV.
“I recommend getting the COVID vaccine and the flu vaccine to protect you, because sometimes, if you don’t get it, you could end up in the hospital. It could end up much worse than if you don’t get it,” Blaine said. “It’s also recommended for adults 75 and older to do the RSV vaccine as well. Ask your local pharmacist and they can give you recommendations,” she said.
Though Nevada’s hospital status is “green” according to the Nevada Hospital Association, the CDC is reporting a pre-fall rise in hospitalizations due to COVID-19.
