LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Across the Las Vegas Valley, locals are marking 24 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with ceremonies, volunteer work and tributes honoring the victims.
At the World Trade Center site in New York City, nearly 3,000 victims’ names were read aloud Thursday. For many, the emotions remain raw, and the Las Vegas Valley has rallied to provide community support.
At 6:30 p.m., the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada is set to lead its annual Sept. 11 Tribute Procession to honor the lives lost. The procession is expected to include first responders, military personnel and community members. Residents and visitors are invited to line the procession route and participate, officials said.
It’s expected to start at Main and Fremont streets.
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue hosted a 9/11 Memorial Observance. Officials say it’s a longtime tradition in the fire service known as the “Tolling of the Bells.”
Palo Verde High School
Palo Verde High School held its annual rededication ceremony that honored one of its own teachers.
Palo Verde High School’s world language teacher, Barbara Edwards, was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.
The ceremony was held at the school’s soccer field with Principal Lisa Schumacher, choir, JROTC, students and staff.
Legacy Traditional School
Legacy Traditional School at Cadence hosted its annual Patriot Day ceremony and First Responders Breakfast. According to a press release, the event aimed to honor the memory of 9/11 while recognizing the sacrifice of military members and first responders in Las Vegas and Henderson.
Students performed patriotic songs and readings while Valley military and first responders were also recognized. The event featured the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, a moment of silence and student-led performances and reflections.
