LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Residents in a Centennial Hills neighborhood say parking tickets are suddenly appearing on their streets and in their driveways, prompting questions about the enforcement.

U.S. Army veteran Gilbert Talag said he was surprised when his next door neighbor received a $50 ticket while parked in his own driveway.

“Yeah, I was very surprised because we’ve never had parking enforcement before,” Talag said.

The City of Las Vegas confirmed parking enforcement was in the area Nov. 25, responding to a resident complaint about an RV parked on the street. The city gave the owner a citation for an oversized vehicle in a residential neighborhood. The city said the officer then drove around the neighborhood to look for additional violations and saw a Jeep that was over the sidewalk, prompting a ticket.

“And I’m just like, why give people $50 tickets for something like that? You could have knocked on the door and said, ‘Hey, you’re parked on the sidewalk,’” Talag said.

Multiple citations issued

The city returned to the neighborhood Dec. 2 to check if the RV was still there. Officials said it wasn’t, but ticketing was still done on other cars.

Talag said he saw parking enforcement again a few days later and started recording.

“So why are you giving them tickets? Because it’s against the law… for what, for what? For parking right here… for not displaying current registration,” Talag said in a cell phone video.

The city’s parking services confirmed there were three total additional citations on the street on Nov. 29 and Dec. 2. The citations included the ticket to the Jeep and two different tickets for failure to display current vehicle registration.

Talag said in a neighborhood full of veterans, first responders and working families, a little grace would go a long way.

“A lot of American cars can’t even fit into these driveways,” Talag said.

The City of Las Vegas said parking rules are enforced in all six wards, and parking services regularly follow up on complaints about unlawful parking and vehicle storage across the city. Parking services have responded to over 8,000 complaints this year.
