LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – This Black History Month, you can literally walk through history on a tour of the Historic Westside and Jackson Avenue.

Minister Stretch Sanders, also known as the Las Vegas Neighborhood Historian, is putting together the walking tour — and also posting it on social media.

During the era of segregation and beyond, residents of the Historic Westside created a bustling business district along Jackson Avenue. From barbershops to beauty shops, restaurants, nightclubs and casinos, community members liken it to an accessible “Strip” for Black Americans.

“I’m very intentional about us walking in the same legacy of those who come before us,” Minister Sanders said.

“We must be intentional with teaching the history of not just the contributions of others, but Las Vegas Black history,” Sanders said.

Descendants and relatives of the original business owners and community leaders will also join the tour and share their family‘s stories.

Community and city leaders have a vision for revitalizing the district. The Jackson Street Alliance helps unite community members and business owners with a mission of revitalization while maintaining its heritage.

The City of Las Vegas outlined its vision and goals in the Hundred Plan.

The tour is happening Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on Jackson Avenue. If you cannot attend, Sanders is posting the video on TikTok: Stretch Sanders
