Watch out for this Social Security swindle

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Those approaching or enjoying retirement, expect to hear from the Social Security Administration fairly regularly. But watch out for any electronic communications from the agency. It could be a scam.

It starts with an email that appears to come from the SSA. It’ll look legitimate right down to the logo. The email advises that your financial statement is ready, and encourages you to click a link or download an attachment to view it.

But — the email’s a fake, and one click will infest your device with malware and compromise your online security.

Check the sender’s email address before you do anything. It may look official, but closer inspection will reveal differences, like additional numbers, letters, or characters. Also, real government agencies typically send sensitive information using paper mail, so the email itself should raise a red flag.

Remember — never open any link or attachment from any unfamiliar senders.
