TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos talked to 13 News on Friday about the intricacies of the Nancy Guthrie investigation.
In an interview with 13 News Chief Investigator Valerie Cavazos, Nanos talked about the extensive collaboration required among local, state, and federal partners.
The sheriff has said his department has a good relationship with the FBI, and they are working well together in the investigation.
Nanos’ statements come after several national outlets reported that an unnamed source said the PCSD was preventing the FBI from accessing evidence in the case.
Nanos said he just wanted to make sure all evidence was being sent to the same lab for testing. In this case, it is DNA Labs International in Florida.
“It was simply about what makes sense here? Do you want your evidence scattered around the country, or do we just send it all to one place when they develop those leads?” Nanos aid. “Those reports are given to all agencies.”
Nanos said there have been significant leads over the last few days.
“Yes,” Nano said. “I mean, think of that video. I looked at it, you looked at it. But we have a team of people who analyze that stuff and break it down to say, this is that backpack and this is where it sold that, that’s pretty incredible. People are talking about a white truck, a white van, or this, that. There are hundreds of leads out there for different and we assign them to those teams, and they go. I don’t have the ability to keep up with them all, but I know that when something significant comes, it’s brought to the table to us, the FBI, and we all sit down and discuss it.”
When asked how long the case would last, Nanos said he wasn’t sure, but they are never giving up.
“Man, I wish we were talking minutes,” he said. “I wish we were, but these cases can be weeks and months and sometimes, sadly, even years. What I want people to know is we’re not giving up at any time. All the cameras can go, the national media can leave. We’re still here. We will find Nancy.”
