LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A West Las Vegas woman is mourning her two dogs after high winds knocked a power line into her backyard Monday, electrocuting the animals.
Laureen Mane said she let her six-year-old pitbull mixes, Kalea and Ace, outside before conditions worsened.
“It was cloudy. It wasn’t rainy. There was some wind. But I didn’t think it was enough to snap a power line,” Mane said.
‘I lost it’
Mane said a short time later she heard a loud boom. Her children went outside to check on the dogs but could not find them. Mane then spotted something through a window.
“I could see like little sparks of fire on the ground. And I was like, what is that? Then I came back out this gate. As I walked closer, I saw the lines sparking. And then I walked closer and I saw Ace and Kalea on the ground laying on the wire. When I saw that, I lost it,” Mane said.
Response from fire, police, and NV Energy
Mane called 9-1-1. Fire crews arrived first, followed by police. Mane said one of her dogs was still alive when responders were on scene.
“At one point, my girl Kalea, she was still breathing. She was breathing. And I begged them. I pleaded to them. Please help my dogs. And nobody did anything,” Mane said.
Metro Police said whenever a power line is live, public safety is the priority, and officers focus on keeping people away until power is cut.
NV Energy released the following statement after being contacted about the incident: “We are saddened to hear of the loss of the two beloved dogs. The safety of our customers is our top priority, and our teams are conducting a thorough investigation into this matter.”
NV Energy also said it plans to work with the Mane family to provide aftercare services for their dogs. Mane said she feels everyone involved treated her and her dogs with insensitivity.
