LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Parents with children at Gwendolyn Woolley Elementary School have a lot of questions about a recording device discovered in a teacher’s classroom this week.
“What was he trying to do with this recording? And how long it’s been going on, is the question,” said parent Lashante Corbin.
CCSD Police tell FOX5 the device was for audio recording and not video. They say just one device was located and are not sure if anyone was recorded. CCSD says the 44-year-old school computer technician Haroon Zakai is on unpaid leave and will not be allowed on campus.
CCSD say he was arrested for “electronic surveillance at school without knowledge.”
A teacher tells FOX5 she found the device inside what looked like a smoke detector. She believes it fell from the ceiling.
“He got on his knees and he’s like, ‘Please don’t tell anybody. Don’t call the cops. This will ruin me,’” she said. “He just wanted to record the kids to try to find words or phrases or certain sounds that can be picked up by AI that would indicate bullying so he can open his own business to create an anti-bullying device that he can sell so that parents are aware of what’s happening to their kids,” she explained.
The teacher did not want to be identified.
Police say they’re unsure how long the device was in the classroom.
