LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — WhatsApp users, be warned! Criminals could give you a call to see if you’re ready to be ripped off.
The latest scam involving the messaging app starts with a phone call from an unknown number. A robotic voice asks you to add the number to your WhatsApp contacts. Then the call ends without explanation. It seems harmless, but it’s actually a test.
Cybercriminals want to see if you’ll follow instructions. If you do add the number, you’re setting yourself up to be the victim of future scams. Bad actors will likely contact you again to try to get access to your account. If they do, they can hijack your account and demand a ransom from you to regain access. They may also steal your identity and use it to commit other crimes.
To avoid falling victim to this type of “fishing,” never add unknown numbers to your contacts. Enable two-step authentication for an added layer of security. And always report and block suspicious numbers on any messaging app.
